Pelicans On the Bayou
About This Spot
Pelicans On the Bayou feels like a cherished local retreat where the rhythm of New Iberia softens into the gentle hum of life by the water. Tucked just off Jefferson Street, this bar & grill invites visitors to slow down and savor a pace that’s unhurried and warmly familiar. Here, the chatter flows easily, mingling with the quiet murmur of Bayou Teche nearby, while the rustic charm of the space lends itself to relaxed afternoons and early dinners filled with a genuine sense of place.
The mood carries the comforting vibe of a mom-and-pop spot, where regulars are greeted like old friends and newcomers are welcomed with honest hospitality. Behind the scenes, the heart of the kitchen turns out dishes that celebrate Louisiana’s rich Cajun heritage with an unpretentious touch. Whether settling into the shaded patio to watch birds and boats pass by or claiming a spot inside amid the homey, wood-accented décor, diners find themselves drawn into a quietly lively setting where the food tells stories as much as the neighborhood does.
At Pelicans On the Bayou, the menu becomes a shared experience rather than a checklist. Plates brimming with seafood, from fried soft shell crab to a mix that might include frog legs and oysters, arrive with the kind of comfort that feels perfectly at home near the bayou. The casual dishes, like homemade onion rings or a classic catfish po’ boy, come with a side of genuine care — the kind you notice most in the small details, like the attentive service and the steady hum of conversation from locals who know this place well. It’s an environment where a bite of a crab burger or a taste of shrimp seasoned with subtle Cajun flair can gently unfold the region’s flavors without taking over the moment.
Visitors often find themselves lingering past the meal, soaking in the warm, easygoing atmosphere that reflects New Iberia’s spirit—a place where good food and simple pleasures come hand in hand. Pelicans On the Bayou invites those who drop in to connect with the slower pace of life by the water, where each visit feels less like a stop and more like a welcomed pause.

grilled shrimp a little overcooked crabcake could use a little bit more crab taste to it. The potato balls were good fried shrimp. in that area, it does have the charm of being on the water and wildlife. maybe change up the batter and and some cajun spice to it and watch the cook time on the seafood. it’s worth the stop

Beautiful day to sit by the bayou and enjoy some good Cajun food. I tried the seafood platter to try a little everything... Shrimp, frog leg, fried oyster and catfish. Shrimp was excellent and the rest was good. My wife enjoyed her Caesar salad with grilled shrimp. We went for an early dinner (4:30pm) and Nora was working alone till night crew arrived. Despite being very busy she did a marvelous job juggling between bartending, taking and delivering orders and bussing tables.

A mom and pop restaurant and plate lunch vibe. I had the rabbit stew, green beans, and red beans. The rabbit stew fell off the bone. Green beans were good. Only reason it didn’t get all starts on food was the red beans were a bit bland. The waitress was very polite.

If you are in New Iberia for lunch, this hidden gem offers AMAZING food and a beautiful patio in back on Bayou Teche.

Good food, not the best seasoning on the grilled catfish; a little plain. The salad was small cubes tomatoes and lettuce, nothing more. I found better choices around town. The server was excellent. Paying the bill was quick. I may be back to check out the beef plates

Quaint little restaurant and boar next to downtown new Iberia. Very friendly staff that even gave us a photo shoot.
